GS1 China

Founded in 1988 with the approval of the State Council, GS1 China is an affiliated organization of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) dedicated to the organization, coordination and management of article coding and automatic identification efforts nationwide. In April 1991, GS1 China became a member of GS1 International and began to commit itself to the promotion of an open, universal, and cross-industry standard for supply chain management – a single, barcode-based global identification system.

GS1 China has been closely following the technological development trend of the world and, on the basis of studies of domestic and overseas article numbering and identification technologies, established and perfected our country's article numbering and identification system, exploited new research fields such as 2D barcode, Electronic Product Code (EPC), product quality tracing, e-commerce and logistics information standardization, which effectively pushed forward the development and application of information technology in the national economy. In the meantime, by virtue of its vigorous explorations and independent innovations, GS1 China has made a series of technological achievements with proprietary intellectual property rights, which dramatically boosted the development of China's article numbering and automatic identification technology.

GS1 China has set up 46 branches in the country, which together form a country-wide work system that combines the functions of code management, technological research, standard formulation, application promotion and technical service all in one, with the central task of improving the article numbering and identification system in China, in order to come up with a standardized solution and a public information service platform and make them available to the entire society.
